Sponsership for Raonic

Although Raonic only made the 3rd round at Indian Wells and lost his first match, in the 2nd round, at Miami, Raonic did get some good news of late!

Changing of the Guard?

Here's a link to an interesting article about a possible 4th round match between Roger Federer and Milos Raonic. I'm less optimistic about Raonic's future than this writer but its exciting to read about the possibilities

Raonic Out-Wills Fish at Indian Wells 7-5,6-4

Why should Canadians be excited about tennis these days? Milos Raonic is clutch. He serves huge on break points. He breaks with high efficiency. He just plain knows which points are huge.

Today's match against Mardy Fish was no exception. It could be argued that Fish outplayed Raonic for most of this match. Fish just could not win any point classified as a break point. Raonic was 2/2 on break chances. Fish was 0/8 on his break chances. Raonic is just plain clutch.

Fish looked good early on, earning several break chances in the 3rd game but was unable to convert. The first set continued on serve but Raonic was appearing nursing a sore back. He used an injury time out for a trainer at 4-5. Fish sensed weakness and pushed Raonic very hard but could not convert his break chance. Raonic held serve to tie the first set at 5-5. Fish, serving in the 11th game,  missed two costly drop shots and went down 6-5.  Raonic held serve and won the first set 7-5.

The second set started on serve. Fish received break chances again at 2-3, but failed once more to capitalize. Fish then broke his racquet in frustration and received a racquet abuse warning. In the decisive 7th game of the second set, Fish challenged two key calls. HawkEye denied his challenges both times giving Raonic a lead he would not relinquish. Fish picked up his play in the final two games of the match but Raonic stood up to his challenge and finished him off 6-4 in the second set.

Raonic will play 18 year old American Ryan Harrison in 3rd round action. Harrison is currently ranked 152 in the world. This is the first I have heard of the young American and I expect a good match!

Raonic Defeats Marsel Ilhan at Indian Wells

I was not able to watch this match so unfortunately I have no commentary. Here are some initial links. The final score was Raonic defeats Ilhan 6-2,7-6(4). Raonic failed to hold serve to close out the match and was forced to win in a tiebreak.

Canada Captures Davis Cup Tie

Canada defeated Mexico in two matches Sunday to capture the tie 4-1. Raonic defeated Garza in three straight sets while Palansky defeated Sanchez in 2 straight sets.

Since the tie had been determined after Raonic's win early Sunday, the second match was reduced to a best of three set match.

Neither match was particularly competitive with both Canadian players looking very good.

Canada advances to play Equador in July. It is suspected that the tie will be played in Quito, which is also at about 9000 ft elevation.

Raonic wins Davis Cup Rubber

Milos Raonic won the first of his Davis Cup rubbers on Friday vs Mexico's Sanchez. The result was not ever in question as Raonic was dominant throughout. The final score was 6-2,6-2,6-1.

Fellow canadian Dancevic was not so lucky. He went up 2 sets to love in his rubber against Mexico's Garza but could not maintain momentum. The raucous Mexican crowd loved every minute of Garzna's 5 set come from behind win. The final score was 2-6,4-6,6-4,6-3,6-4.

Raonic Receives Wildcard for Indian Wells

Raonic will play in the Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells starting March 7. Although his ATP ranking is now high enough to be granted automatic entry, his ranking was not yet high enough when initial invitations were sent. Instead he will receive a wildcard and could play any of the world's top players in the early rounds!
